Airbnb
Airbnb seeks a Staff Machine Learning Engineer to own the design and deployment of traffic classification systems that protect the platform from bots, scrapers, and abusive actors while serving billions of daily requests. You'll architect end-to-end ML pipelines that combine internal models with third-party signals to make real-time routing decisions, then continuously harden policies as adversaries adapt. The role demands balancing inference performance within strict latency constraints at the internet edge while maintaining rigorous offline evaluation frameworks that ensure model improvements are empirically sound and resistant to evasion. This is a fit for someone with 9+ years building production ML systems in adversarial domains like fraud detection or traffic integrity, who can architect scalable offline-to-online data pipelines and has hands-on experience with large-scale SQL and event-stream feature engineering. You should be comfortable with edge infrastructure nuances (CDN, load balancers, HTTP signatures) and excel at communicating technical trade-offs to leadership and cross-functional teams. An MS/PhD in a quantitative field or equivalent deep systems experience is expected, with preference for doctoral-level training and expertise in graph-based or Sybil detection methods. Based in the United States, this is a full-time staff-level position where you'll partner daily with security analysts, platform engineers, and international teams to integrate traffic intelligence into automated mitigation workflows while mentoring junior engineers on design rigor and technical quality.

Airbnb was born in 2007 when two hosts welcomed three guests to their San Francisco home, and has since grown to over 5 million hosts who have welcomed over 2 billion guest arrivals in almost every country across the globe. Every day, hosts offer unique stays and experiences that make it possible for guests to connect with communities in a more authentic way.
The Community You Will Join:
Our web and API surfaces handle requests from guests and hosts alongside a growing volume of automated agents: AI assistants, crawlers, and scrapers. We build the systems that bring clarity to this traffic, combining in-house ML and vendor signals to decide in real time how to serve billions of daily requests. Anti-bot and anti-scraping detection is our most adversarial mandate, but the wider challenge is full traffic classification: building evaluation frameworks that tell legitimate automation apart from abusive actors, so high-stakes decisions hold up across the fleet.
The Difference You Will Make:
You will architect and maintain Airbnb’s end-to-end traffic classification ML systems, balancing high-performance model deployment with rigorous offline data pipelines. Success is measured by your ability to harden edge-traffic policies—targeting reduced bot-incident MTTM—and by establishing rigorous evaluation practices that ensure foundational signal accuracy and evasion-resistance across the fleet.
