Small Axe Studios, 2K's new sports gaming venture in Burnaby, is seeking a Principal Software Engineer to architect and lead the narrative systems technology powering their upcoming franchise. You'll own the technical foundation for cinematic storytelling, dialog integration, facial animation workflows, and creator-facing tools built on Unreal Engine 5. This role bridges engine-level C++ development with production pipelines, requiring you to translate creative ambitions from design, animation, and audio teams into scalable runtime systems that deliver emotionally resonant, interactive story moments. The ideal candidate brings 15+ years of professional game development experience with deep expertise in modern C++ and Unreal Engine architecture. You should have a proven track record owning complex systems from research through shipping, with particular strength in cinematic sequencing, animation systems, or narrative tooling. Beyond technical prowess, you'll need strong communication skills to mentor engineers and collaborate fluidly across creative disciplines, translating ambiguous artistic goals into robust technical solutions. This is a full-time, leadership-track position in Burnaby, British Columbia, at a newly formed studio building a groundbreaking sports IP from the ground up. You'll have the opportunity to define technical standards, evaluate emerging engine features, and shape the long-term direction of narrative technology for a large-scale production.

What We Need
We are looking for a Principal Software Engineer, Narrative Systems to own and lead the development of cinematic, narrative, and storytelling technology for our game. In this role, you will partner closely with Design, Animation, Audio and Production to define the technical foundation for emotionally resonant, high-quality, and deeply interactive story moments built in Unreal Engine 5.
You will help establish the architecture for our narrative systems, including cinematic sequencing, scripted events, dialog integration, camera behavior, facial animation workflows, and creator-facing tools. This is a highly collaborative technical leadership role for someone who can move fluidly between engine-level C++ development, content pipeline design, runtime systems, and creative production needs.
The ideal candidate has deep Unreal Engine experience, strong technical judgment, a passion for interactive storytelling, and the ability to lead complex systems from early research through production, polish, and ship.

The pay range for this position in British Columbia at the start of employment is expected to be between CAD $144,200 and CAD $213,375 per year. However, actual pay offered is based on market location and may vary further depending on individualized factors for job candidates, such as job-related knowledge, skills, experience, and other objective business considerations.
