# Senior Staff Machine Learning Engineer, Data & Eval at Airbnb

Airbnb's Core ML team is seeking a Senior Staff Machine Learning Engineer to lead evaluation strategy and data infrastructure for their generative AI-powered customer support initiatives. You'll set technical direction for measuring model quality, designing data flywheels that turn user feedback into learning signals, and building evaluation frameworks that connect offline metrics to real business outcomes. This role bridges product, engineering, and operations to create trusted, scalable systems for continuously improving AI assistants and support tooling.

Your day-to-day work involves defining success metrics for GenAI systems, building evaluation frameworks with strong bias and reliability controls, designing instrumentation and labeling strategies, and leading cross-functional quality initiatives. You'll develop production pipelines for dataset creation, model monitoring, and automated testing while making architectural decisions that balance speed, rigor, cost, and safety across the evaluation infrastructure.

This role requires a PhD in Computer Science, Mathematics, Statistics or equivalent, plus 10+ years shipping end-to-end ML/AI systems with at least 2 years in production GenAI. You need 5+ years as a senior individual contributor leading large technical initiatives, deep expertise in evaluation methodology and LLM systems, and proven experience building data pipelines and quality systems at scale. Prior exposure to customer support ML applications is a plus. This is a full-time position based in the United States.
