# Senior AI Platform Engineer at Afresh

Afresh is building the core AI platform for grocery retailers, powering decisions across major chains like Albertsons and Meijer. This senior role focuses on the foundational infrastructure that transforms raw grocery data into reliable context for language models and AI agents. You'll design the knowledge graphs and retrieval systems that ground models in production-grade data, build the agent platforms and serving infrastructure that other engineers depend on, and own the evaluation frameworks and observability that measure whether these systems actually work. This is early-stage platform work where you'll make core architectural decisions in a space without established playbooks.

The ideal candidate brings 3+ years shipping production software or ML systems, with hands-on experience building retrieval systems, agents, and critically, rigorous evaluation frameworks for LLM applications. You're comfortable with the inherent messiness of AI systems—latency-cost tradeoffs, non-determinism, hallucination risks—and instinctively build guardrails and measurements rather than eyeballing quality. Strong data-engineering fundamentals matter: you've worked with modern cloud data stacks like Databricks and MLflow, built pipelines and data models, and understand how to harden prototypes into reusable platform capabilities.

Based in San Francisco, this is a full-time position. The tech stack centers on Python, PySpark, dbt, Databricks, Airflow, and Claude-based agent systems. Experience with knowledge graphs, vector stores, hybrid search, and agent frameworks like LangGraph is a plus, as is familiarity with complex enterprise data domains like retail.
